Curbside Recycling

Olathe residents can participate in the City's curbside recycling program for a low monthly fee of $3.25. To sign up, fill out the form at the bottom of the page, or you may also call 913-971-9311.

How to Recycle Curbside Style

The City will provide you with an 18-gallon blue recycling bin. Just place your recycling items into the bin together, and place at the curb by 8 am on your scheduled trash day. Please use the bin's lid on windy or rainy days to keep materials dry and avoid littering the neighborhood. There's no need to sort. Recyclables will be picked up separate from your household's trash, by a recycling truck.

Single Stream Recycling

The week of May 4th the City is moving to single stream recycling where materials are sorted at a facility rather than at the curb. This streamlined the recycling process and saves on fuel, overtime and equipment costs. Citizens are asked to place the recycling bin by the curb just as before, but there are changes in the materials that can be recycled. With the adjustments the City will be able to recycle more plastics and phonebooks and cardboard for the first time.

Unfortunately the market has made it impractical to continue recycling glass objects, so the City can no longer accept glass at the curb after May 4th. On a trial basis, the City has set up a glass recycling drop-off point at the Kansas Avenue and Poplar Street drop-off recycling site.

The current economic environment has had an impact on the price of recycled materials, reducing the revenue the City receives from selling these materials. The City uses the recycling materials sales to keep recycling rates low. By changing to a single stream collection system, the City is trying to realize enough cost savings to offset the lost revenue.

For additional information about recycling and the planned changes, please call 971-9311.
